A Night at the Pierre:
I got off the train and walked 8 blocks north to the lower corner of Central Park. A landmark intersection, steps from my destination, I knew would live up to its reputation. But then I saw it, and I was struck - the Pierre, quietly situated across the Park on 61st Street and 5th Avenue.
It’s amazing how an event at a new place, in a new culture, for a new celebration, has the ability to simultaneously feel like something you’ve always been apart of, always celebrated, always enjoyed, always belonged, always been family…..
That was my experience at the Pierre for Dawali 2023: a Festival of Lights.
It was a celebration, yes, but it was a coming together, a joining a union, a blending of cultures, backgrounds, histories, young, old, new, seasoned, for one purpose. It was dancing with strangers, enjoying food made by the hands you’re shaking, it was laughing with strangers and talking like you’ve known each other for years.
